This short documentary shows how the rare and difficult to rear White-Streaked Silkmoths (Saturnia albofasciata) can be mated in captivity, both hand-paired and un-assisted. This footage was shot in Santa Clarita and Juniper Hills, CA during the 2007 season. The music is "Jolly People" from the Technician CD "Digital Dreaming". I chased my first Cabbage Butterfly with a shoebox back the 70s when I was a little kid. That's when it all started. I collected off and on for years but only got seriously into the life cycle studies and photography about 10 years ago. The particular species (albofasciata) I've been working with for about 4 years now. Since there was so little documentation about it, I thought it would be cool to break some new ground! :D

Many people are. Sorry to hear that! :D What's ironic is that the moths are pretty harmless, while their caterpillars can cause stings and sometimes severe allergic reactions. Thanks for watching (enduring!) :D

Butterflies are much more difficult to pair than moths and need open space with just right conditions for flight displays and courtship. They almost certainly won't just pair on their own in a cage. If you hand-pair them, the female should be very fresh (1-2 days max) and males at least 3 days old. Wild-caught females are almost always already mated and rarely mate again. Getting eggs out of them is another ordeal - it's not so easy either! Good luck with them and keep me posted! :D
