Hummingbird on my finger!

We have Anna's year round but during migration we get Anna's, Allen's and Roufus all fighting over the feeders. We put two up one by the kitchen and one on the other side of the house. In the summer, they have many natural flowers to sip nectar from so they don't come as often. Here is what I do. I take down the kitchen feeder so there is only one feeder available. [Remember to clean and change feeders at least once a week] The back porch feeder is where I usually stand. It has been in the same place for 8 years [year round] so it is established by the hummers as a continual source of food.I stand with my fingers on the perches and wait...patiently. I find it helps to have a sweatshirt hood over my head to keep hair from moving and for camouflage. Any kind of motion does alarm them. As you probably know, hummingbirds come and go. I try to time my standing next to the feeder to when they are around, I rest my arms when they are gone. When a hummingbird does come, it will rush you and buzz around your head. If you are still and don't move your head much, it will come and land on you. It's incredible. I have had as many as 4 sitting on me with three hovering to get in. It feels like I am in a hummer airport! One year, I substituted the feeder with myself standing with a flower in my mouth. I got one to sip from it! The feeling of their wind they make and the weight of them with their little hearts beating, not to mention the tiniest feet I have ever seen is unmatched. Well except for day old ducklings. In our area, Anna's often try fight off the migratory. There is usually one Anna who claims the porch feeder and we call it the "pit boss". When it is off chasing another bird away, the others come in for their turn. When there are too many invaders for the "pit boss" to handle, it just gives up and joins in.Good luck to those who try this and please share your success. What if felt like, did you hold your breath, did you look them in the eye?

I held a wild baby hummingbird today. I found it on the ground. It was awesome! I even got to see it eat/drink...it was licking a peach that my friend handed to me. It was so cute! I held it all day!

I went to this camp today and while i was there I found a live hummingbird on the ground. It wasn't quite an expert flyer yet so it was stuck on the ground. I picked it up so it woudn't get stepped on and I carried it around all day! it was awesome...
