In this short a female and a male Golden-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons) collect sunflower seeds from a feeder and the ground, wedge them in a crack in a dead Escarpment Black Cherry tree (Prunus serotina var. eximia), and hammer them until they can extract the kernel inside. Woodpeckers are generally recognized to be insect feeders, but are familiar visitors to winter feeding stations. The female here was filmed on 26 March 2007, and the male on 9 April 2007, from out my office window, one mile north of Ingram, Kerr County, Texas. Also seen are Chipping Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow, House Finch and Black-chinned Hummingbird.Flooding can be seen in the background of some clips of the female. This was the day of a moderate-sized flash flood in Kerr County -- see also my short Chocolate Milk River, filmed the same day.film by tony gallucciHolly Riedel -- Executive Producerspecial thanks to Joshua Rose.
