The Webern pointilliste orchestration makes the Bach sound like a 20th century composition. I love this. I love Bach and I think this orchestration is superb. Bach's harmonic technique sounds 'advanced' even after 300yrs

I don't have an emotional response to Bach, i don't enjoy listening to his music, although I have studied him (counter point), and I respect him wholly.Webern's music on the other hand, speaks to me more then words ever could. I have this on vinyl along with six pieces for orchestra =).

Maybe it's because I've accustomed by ear to the music of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern, but for some reason I find that a string quartet by Webern expresses so much more to me than a string quartet by Mozart. This transcription is so beautiful. Sofia Gubaidulina also has an "Offertorium" based on the Bach Ricercare.

If you like webern or not, thats not important. You can´t deny that he is a great composer and that he contribute to the music of the 20th century.

I love this transcription by Webern. Frederick the Great's theme is almost a "tone row", so it's no surprise Webern transcribed it.Salonen and Ozawa have good versions on CD. |
