She was penniless because she donated the proceeds of her hit to the catholic church. The Belgian government went after her for income taxes, and the church refused to pay any of it.

she committed suicide becuase she realized she was penniless and didnt know what to do with her career since it was going no where.what she needed to do was a find a good agent and move over to the United States that probably could have given her some money to her as she sang today in concert halls and symphony concerts throught the cities like Ms.Newton-john does till this day earning a good income from this concerts

Soeur commited suicide with barbiturates and alcohol she and her companion of 10 years(1982)

It would be terrific if a monument to Soeur Sourire were built on the grounds of the convent where she served in Belgium (whatever is on said property today), together with an apology from the Church & Belgian government for their culpability in the tax controversy which contributed to her suicide.Such a gesture would associate the legacy of Soeur Sourire more with the happiness of her music than the bleak means of her passing from this earth, although that too should never be forgotten.

Never mind my question. I researched myself and may now share with others that "Soeur Sourire," directed by the Belgian film director Stijn Coninx (known for his 1992 Academy Award-nominated film "Daens") is currently in production, scheduled for release at the end of 2009.

Actually, the footage of Soeur Sourire performing "Dominique" on "The Ed Sullivan Show" should have survived, as most all of Sullivan's programs were restored and are the property of Andrew Solt's SOFA Productions. I'm surprised no one has uploaded that performance here on You Tube. |
