Ruby-throated hummingbirds competing for a seat on the feeder. This is in Louisiana shortly before the migration to Mexico when the hummingbird population is the highest. The ones with the dark throats (ruby throats when the light hits them just right) are males and the ones with light throats are females.

What a great video! I just love hummingbirds. We have a family of 3 Annas at our home and they've become part of the family. Mama hummer is nesting right now so the family is growing. I have never seen them share the feeder so this was pretty amazing. Nectar is a fine source of nutrition - 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water and boil for 3 minutes. They need it to survive because when the flower source is down they depend on it. Thanks again for a great video.

Hummingbirds get the energy they need to maintain their astonishing metabolism primarily from flower nectar and the sugar water they find at feeders. For protein and other nutrients, they also eat soft-bodied insects and spiders, sugar is just the fuel for getting their real nourishment

Honest question: is it healthy and safe to feed them sugar water mixes? Isn't that a poor diet for these birds? I know they have high caloric needs, so do feeders, in the long run, create a poor nutritional diet?
