marianne - If you can explain to me what being boring had anything to do with what I said I might care what you think. And i'm aware this is common sense things he's speaking of, but people need a reminder sometimes, and it's obvious he reminded a heck of a lot of people in a good way. Just read the comments. And it's "kindergarten" not "Kinder Garden"

I'm not surprised if you spend all your time all swimming with dolphins, and inspiring the hard of thinking!

one of the issues in science right now is an insane level of competitiveness in which people are devoting every moment to work in order to get the leg-up on competition. this may be the case with other fields as well, but i wouldn't know about that. I do, however, know that this is the case in science academia. All of our bosses berate us for not spending MORE time. we're constantly being told "this isn't a 40hr/week job...you'll be expected to be here nights AND weekends".

I did get that. That's nice to say. But he also pointed out numerous times that he spend most of his life at his office. He references that many times, weekends and nights he was there at work with his students. That's not uncommon in this day and age. But it was pretty clear to me. Bringing his wife out at a speach was very nice.

You didn't get that? Didn't you see the ending when he said "This should be my time, it's my last lecture but I feel terrible about my wife not having a proper birthday" so he bought out the cake and made her cry. It was beautiful. At the end of the lecture he says This talk wasn't for you it was for my children. That alone speaks volumes. He's saying Yes, we need to work, but family is always there and always important. This is how to make a good life for yourself and therefore for your family.

prof pausch explains this about 2 mins in. (just after proving he was in phenomenally good health by doing a few silly little press-ups). Point two of "what we're NOT talking about".

Help me better understand. Great lecture, but all he talks about is his work. Little mention to family life or anything outside work. I was expecting this would be a message of keeping priorities straigh and loving your family before its too late. Didn't get that. Am I missing anything here? |
