You method is fine. It is easier for someone learning to do it this way. The weekend tech may not be able to find .25in past TDC on firing stroke. As long as you are on the flat side of the cam. That is what matters. Thanks

My name is Jon, I work with "Bob's Small Engine Repair" in Remington, VA. I always set my valves at just about 1/4 inch past TDC. Your method seems to work very well and im not criticizing it by any means, i enjoyed the segment very much and its good to know theres help in the industry.

knock or not, it doesnt matter, if the piston does not move the problem is evident. You have a broken connecting rod.

I still set them on .004 , I still set them in the same order. You just have a lock nut instead of a set screw. Not a big difference.

what about on an ohc (honda)engine?

Does it knock when you turn it over?

Nice work, I usually set it when the engine is set at top dead center and both valves are closed, but i haven't worked on a V-twin before so maybe the way to do it on a V-twin is a bit different. I did notice that you didnt say to check the valve cover seal/gasket. Might be a good idea for people to check that so the valve cover doesn't leak.

Oh boy well I did a compession test and none in the cylinder so I removed the head and well the piston does not move. What gives?

Check your carb, it has seperate jets for each cylinder. It is possible that the carb is stopped up on one side.
