All I did was to take the bottom off the feeder with some of the syrup still in it and hold it in my hand near where the feeder usually hangs. The key to it I think was just letting the birds get very used to feeding there, and also you have to hold pretty still, although flowers and trees that they are used to being around move all the time, so I am not even sure how much movement scares them. I sat there for a while before they started coming, just one or two at first, and then the rest!
