I wouldn't say unnecessary. Religion should be reformed, but not unnecessary. If thought and speech become too "free,"....some people will begin to think "why do we have to help the poor? and forgive?" "who says anyone has to?" Religion act as a compass in some way. It's nowhere near perfect but it directs people to doing those things if followed correctly and if certain insane people don't take over its leadership.

in the past, religion was used as a medium for education i.e. women went into convents to escape the societal norm of marriage and better themselves through education provided by the convent. The bible what was learned, i.e. sophisticated philosophies such as the rich helping the poor and forigveness, something that was new to the people when it was developed. Religion/ fear of god+hell was used to teach these new philosophies. in a time of freedom of thought/speech, religion is unnecessary

the "substance" of my last post is that your stance that obviously anyone with an IQ would automatically think the Bible is bs simply isn't true, hence your one-liner meant little. religion and spiritual things are not measured with IQ. Was Martin Luther King Jr. a retard? Was Tolkien? Is Francis Collins (geneticist, chemist, head of the Human Genome Project)? Was Gandhi? Was Newton? Was Gregor Mendel? It all comes down to opinions and beliefs, which are not part of the intelligence quotient.
