Taekwondo originates from 5 different styles, developed in 5 different schools in Korea. At time of invasion, the 5 styles merged to defend korea, creating the name Taekwondo. The martial art is not limited 2 kicks, it just emphasises on them because they r powerfull, we r all used 2 using arms, not legs. Get all 4 right, and u have 5 deadly weapons, 5 with ur head. Copetitive taekwondo is completely different. its point based, kicks give more points and grapple techniques r not allowed. TKD rox

there is still punching, elbows etc in taekwondo. jsut scores less points. and is not used in competion as much as a result. besides, legs are longer than arms.it did come from karate and the thing i think is a shame is choi hong hi got rid of joint locks. but its still a beautiful martial art. and deadly. in fact there is so much emphasis on kick, that it is said that people of all martial art backgrounds look to taekwondo masters to see how to kick correctly.

taekwondo just coppied from the original karate of japan.. in history japan conquered korea and the karate of japan is addopted by the korean. Korean just wanted to have a version of their own.. thats why they removed punching in taekwondo.. its like playing a martial art with an impairment.. its just limiting your moves.... Korea is very good in propagation thats why the art became famous.. but if we research about the art it just copied from karate...

I practice muay thai kickboxing and i've come accross people that started in tae kwon do but now compete in muay thai. These people have mentioned that muay thai is more effective and realistic yet they still apply some tae kwon do techniques when they train. I would say that it would be a good idea to cross train with different martial arts. Sometimes you need quickness such as in tkd or power from muay thai. And for someone not used to martial arts, tkd's kicks would seem intimidating.

It may not be as deadly as other martial arts, but at least it doesn't kill people just Brazil Jiu Jitsu and what-not. |
