You're right. Sometimes war is necessary. That's why we should not exhaust our military resources by fighting pointless wars of choice, wars of aggression on multiple fronts. What if a situation arises in which we truly need them for DEFENSE, but they're all over fighting wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and (God forbid) Iran?
