And I think he meant Mom and Dad have driven him to drink, not encouraged it. Fits the song better: it's about being 18 and lost, confused about everything, almost an adult but still a kid... So legal age doesn't matter, period.

You're applying year 2008 laws to a year 1972 recording. Things change. Besides he didn't say "mom and dad having me LEGALLY drinking whiskey". A lot of teens drink before they are legal.

i don't understand the lyric "mom and dad got me drinking whiskey" when in the states its illegal to drink till your 21. it means a totally different thing to me cause in Canada the legal drinking age is 18 and i had been listening to this song in that mind set till i realized the states have different drinking laws.
