dusteroo... there is a study done by the Univ of Wisconsin entitled "The use of scrap tires in civil and environmental engineering" that basically answers your question about leaching; no UV no deteriation is the basic answer.

incredible. I've been interested in earthsips for a long time. If I were to build one in my area, what could I do to convince the local government that it was earth friendly ? Doesn't the rubber in the tires contaminate the soil ? I doubt so, but I'd like to be prepared for a debate with local gov. officials when they bring that up.I'd like to know.Thanks, Earthship.
