It's kind of a weird thing. Their Japanese language songs did a lot better here in the US than did their English ones (and by all accounts, "Baby Love Child" would have probably gone under the radar if not used on an episode of Futurama). This isn't an isolated incident either (Nena's "99 Luftbaloons" is another example of this).

I was playing some pizzicato five for a friend the other day and she was saying how happy their music was, and it's true, even a sad song for them is so upbeat and uplifting

The lead singer is almost always just that, the singer and sometimes co-writes. The guy, Konishi Yasuharu, writes, arranges, and programs everything, and plays bass, and probably piano.
