Ha! Yup, she makes a walking onion out of me sometimes, too. ;o) That Fides is a real shocker indeed, especially coming after Urbain's tease of an ariette. And those 2 'Ah!' that starts Dido's death aria... You know there is no light at the end of the tunnel right then and there... and she still has 4 more minutes to turn you into a sobbing machine. Mercy! Sometimes I want to get inside her head as she sings... but then I think better of it.. I'm a chicken! ;o)

I first heard this aria on the recording of the Athens '07 recital with Simone Kermes, and man, it really got to me. Like you, I wanted to scream in horror. And even after I bought the 'French Arias' CD and listened it through, this aria still remains my favorite. Though this CD sure abounds in tragic pieces. A drastic depressant, it is, Fides' aria especially. I thought I'd go get a Kleenex from the kitchen.

You know... if I hear this in live theater, I'd probably be screaming 'Non!!!' instead of clapping after that last note... desperate to get Sapho to un-jump from the cliff! She does tragedy so realistically I'm afraid of listening to this CD sometimes! :o) Great visuals to boot, Arashi! |
