Carnival 2008 -Beija Flor Samba de Enredo

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: "Samba school" (see Wikipedia.com for a brief explanation) winner, Beija Flor(trans. Humming bird) of Nilópolis, for 2008, parading its "Samba-Enredo" (their tune + Plot in its theatrical street show of floats & people parade). Literally thousands of people in costumes dancing until 6 AM. The singer is "Neguinho" (audio and at the parade). "Mestre Paulinho" conducted the musicians' parade. It also includes: a "queen of drummers"( the leading front girl--in Portuguese: "Rainha de Bateria"); One Master of Cerimonies with his partner, the Flag Bearer(Port. "Mestre Sala" & "Porta Bandeira"); also a female(in this case) who is in "detaque"(trans. "notability"; usually upon a float--but it can be a man also). The "baianas" (ladies from Bahia )group are always present with their typical large dresses and head ornaments (Carmen Miranda-like). There is the "children's group"(mirim) besides the "Comissão de Frente"(trans. "Executive body" with the "front row," or "Abre Alas"). The "alas"(Trans. "sections") are each group of people who dresses up with a particular theme and separates the ornamented floats(usually four floats per school but Beija-Flor presented 8 allegorical floats). There are several "alas" in each school: 32 total in this Beija-Flor Samba School, totalling 3200 people dancing.The audio used in this version is an overdub for quality's sake, since the video suffered so much already. The emphasis is on the tune which, with its lyrics, tells the plot of the "Escola de Samba's" theme while parading to the audience. The lyrics follow below.This short video will give you a general idea of the energy level during their 80 minutes performance in front of the judges (and audience) who had to chose the best club("school" from the Portuguese: "Escola") among a total of 12 schools in Rio de Janeiro. Note: most anyone interested may contact the "escola" of their interest, months in advance, and upon a reasonable fee paid, he/she will be taught (thus the name "school") their part/role in the group's choreography to participate in the actual parade the following year.
