The country is divided into 29 provinces and a national district. There are three main mountain ranges that cross the country. There is 1,566 kilometres of coastline, over a third being beach, with some of the highest mountains in the West Indies the summit of which culminates at Pico Duarte, reaching an altitude of 3,175 metres.
