If only I could NOT to know that Cohen was ever involved in scientology and that the song is connected with it! Cohen is great and I love this song, and I wouldn't like to spoil it's magic by trying to interprete it this (or any other) way.

There's nothing homosexual or drug related in this song, it's quite obviously just a straight forward story of the conflict between two very different brothers. The storyteller is a straight-laced, blue collar man, who has a wealthy brother that first courts his brother's wife with the luxury his life allows him, and then after the required discovery and disconnect, becomes involved in Scientology, which is entirely about the process of going clear (removing your thetans) so yeah.
