Me too. I always thought that the version with Mancini's score and the opening credits was better.

"I know. I'm working on a picture...they want Charleton Heston to play a Mexican."Amazingly enough, it works. It's a testament to Welles' talent.

I have seen both cuts of the movie and on the whole I prefer the Welles version. Not based off of any one thing, just lots of little things. Welles had an eye for the details. And I must say that opening tracking shot sticks in my mind. Learned about the movie by the song with the same name by Tom Russell

Shit, I hate this restored version. Mancini's score on this scene used to be one of my favorites. The original movie is available on the Collector's Edition, right?

Awesome Orson!Anyone know how many takes it took to get that?

Well, if you'd seen the original release with the intact Mancini score you would note that the "suspense" music is right there, all through the scene, without the sudden interruptions and changes that this new edit has brought to it. By his own admission, this was Henry Mancini's best film score, the one he was probably proudest of, and it's a shame that we can't hear it unadulterated on Touch of Evil anymore.

I wouln't say "butchered". Welles' vision of the audio for this movie was misunderstood in his time because it was a breaktrough. Perhaps you just got used to the other version, anyway I think you should give it a chance. Don't you notice how suspense is built using the music from the car with the bomb? And in case you based your opinion on watching this paticular clip, I may add that the audio sounds kind of funny and the dvd sounds much better. Also try reading Walter Murch's saying on this. |
