misaellabayen,The corpses are left to float by authorities who were expected to cremate them. But those guys take the payment from relatives and then to save on firewood just discard the corpses in the river and tell relatives that they cremated the actual body. It's unfortunate and it's not the custom to discard corpses without cremation. It's just corruption and greed.

I respect d culture & religion of India, bt 1 thing is..dat practice of letting d corpse float n d river while most of d people r taking a bath & even drink from it. unsanitary isn't it? i see also some dead body cremated beside d river w/ only some firewood & dried grass.dat s what u said an expensive way 2 cremate? why dey dont make a place like cemetery & buried their corpse der so dat it wil nt affect d health of d living.anyway Christian, Muslim & ader religion hav der own cemetery.

Yes, the occasional corpse is part of the 'scene' at Benares, because it is the most esteemed place to day...there are hospices where women[mostly] are waiting out their final days, and some families simply can't afford to pay for a proper cremation afterwards.
